The Museum of Contemporary Art is one of
the finest modernist buildings in Skopje, embodying the post-earthquake
reputation of Skopje as ‘the City of Solidarity’. Designed by the polish
architectural team ‘The Tigers’ and donated to the citizens of Skopje by the
Polish government as a gesture of international support in the aftermath of the
devastating 1963 earthquake. With its impressive position at the top of the
central hill Kale, it commands an impressive panoramic view over the city and
the mountainous landscape beyond, which is carefully framed by the main volume
of the gallery, which is raised on a grid of round columns. Through its
minimalist design, the building’s modernist idiom is evident through the use of
columns, large surfaces of white unadorned façades and the prevalence of
materials such as concrete and glass, making the building rich with natural
light. Its formal composition of pure volumes and void spaces have resulted in
a very delicate and sculptural object with a series of delightful spaces, which
I have enjoyed getting to know better through a series of photographic studies,
sketches, drawings and collages. I also participated in a model workshop, and
made an abstracted 1:50 model of the museum, under the guidance of Prof. Martin
Gulevski, a renowned architect and professor in Skopje.
